Victorian guideline on Candida auris for health services

Key messages

  • In 2019, Candida auris (C. auris) was made an urgent notifiable condition. Pathology services must immediately (24/7) notify the department by telephone on 1300 651 160 upon initial diagnosis of all suspected or confirmed cases.
  • This version of the guideline has been updated to include changes to notification requirements and to include the role of Local Public Health Units in the public health management of AMR conditions.
  • This guideline applies to all paediatric and adult health services in Victoria. For the purpose of this guideline, the term 'health service' refers to public and private health services, hospitals and denominational hospitals that admit patients overnight.
  • The guidance also applies to all satellite haemodialysis units and day oncology units. Surgical day procedure centres are not within the scope of this guideline.
  • Recommendations in this guideline supplant all other state and national infection control guidelines related to the management of C. auris.
  • Any isolation of a suspected or confirmed C. auris (as defined in the glossary of this guideline) from clinical, screening or environmental samples are in scope.

Templates, forms and other supporting resources referred to within the guideline are available to be downloaded below.

C. auris surveillance data collection forms

The C. auris surveillance data collection form is to be used for all confirmed human C. auris isolates.

It is preferred that the secure online form be used to submit this data.

Note: the form is called "Notification of Carbapenemase producing organisms (CPO)". C. auris forms can be submitted via this form as well. Select Candida auris under the notifiable condition in the first drop-down box.

If this is not possible, complete the printable form and fax it to the department on 1300 651 170. The C. auris surveillance data collection form was updated in October 2025.
