Guidance for sex workers living with HIV

Information for sex workers living with HIV

The department has developed guidance for sex workers living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in partnership with Living Positive Victoria, Positive Women Victoria, Vixen and Scarlet Alliance.

The law in Victoria has changed. It is no longer illegal for people living with HIV to work as sex workers.

This guidance is the main source of information to support sex workers newly diagnosed or living with HIV in Victoria. It is a companion document to the STI and BBV prevention guidance for the sex industry.

The document includes information about:

  • HIV and HIV treatment.
  • Antiretroviral therapy and treatment as prevention.
  • Reasonable steps to prevent sexual transmission.
  • Stigma and disclosure.
  • Services for sex workers and people living with HIV, including peer services.
